REGENSIFY VS SHISEIDO: The Battle of Adenosine Shampoo

Adenosine and Shiseido Adenovital

When Shiseido launched the Adenovital series some years ago, the entire product family became an instant hit and went on to sell many million units. The reason for Adenovital's extreme popularity was because of this particular active ingredient called Adenosine. Hence, Shiseido can be seen as the market leader for being the first to market the Adenosine ingredient into the hair care industry. Before we make any further comparison, let's look at some facts about Adenosine.

What is Adenosine?

Adenosine is a naturally occurring chemical compound present in all human cells and is an vital ingredient for the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level and is also referred to as the "energy currency" of the cell. In the skincare application, topical Adenosine is easily a top ingredient choice for its anti-aging properties. One thing that you may not know is that your scalp ages even faster than your skin and an aging scalp can lead to thinning hair and hair loss due to a slower divide of hair cells. In the hair care application, topical adenosine can prevent scalp aging and prolong the lifespan of anagen hair.

In a study done in 2013, it was found that the AGA group treated with Adenosine showed comparable hair growth effects as the AGA group treated with Minoxidil at the end of six months, which conclude that Adenosine is equally as effective as Minoxidil. What was more interesting was the group treated with Adenosine had a higher patient satisfaction score than the group treated with Adenosine. This higher satisfaction score can be explained by the fact that topical adenosine is side-effects free and does not cause much initial hair shed unlike Minoxidil. Hence, it is perceived that Adenosine is more superior in faster prevention of hair loss and favorable appearance of newly grown hair, although both Minoxidil and Adenosine would probably end up similar result in the long term. In 2015, a Japanese study also concluded that topical adenosine result in higher anagen hair and thicker hair. Ageing is an inevitable process especially when we hit past middle age beyond 30s. Hence, Adenosine is a powerful ingredient that you would love to have in your hair care regimen. This is why REGENSIFY includes Adenosine ingredient in our hair care formulation. While shampoo and conditioner may not directly contribute to hair growth as compared to a hair serum, a healthy scalp paves the prerequisite to hair growth, which is why it is still important to invest in a good hair shampoo and conditioner. In this article, let's just compare the shampoo only and look at two Adenovital Shampoos.

The Expensive Price Tag in Shiseido...

The retail price of the Shiseido shampoo is around SGD 30+ range, which is at a comparable price to our REGENSIFY DHT Blocking Shampoo. Our normal retail selling price for REGENSIFY DHT Blocking Shampoo is about SGD 36 (around USD 27), inclusive of 7% Goods and Service tax. But wait, the REGENSIFY DHT Blocking Shampoo is a big 500 ml bottle while both the SHISEIDO shampoo are only 250 ml, half the size of our REGENSIFY shampoo. It means for the same price, you can use REGENSIFY shampoo for almost twice as long. Take note that Shiseido sells their products to various distributors such as hair salon and there are probably dozens of middleman selling the same Adenovital shampoo at Amazon, Ebay, Lazada and Shopee. These middleman earn a cut out of it, which adds on to the high price. For us, you can buy direct in our website or through our official stores in marketplace, without any middleman distributors. Isn't this sweet?

The Ingredients...

Before doing any ingredient comparison, let's ask ourselves what are the main causes of hair loss. Without any doubt, most people will say DHT is main culprit for causing hair loss. Other than DHT, nutrient deficiency and cell aging in scalp are another two main types of hair loss. Cell aging in scalp can be addressed by Adenosine and Ubiquinone (also known as Coenzyme Q10). Hair loss due to nutrient deficiency can be addressed through vitamin supplements, such as Biotin and Niacinamide. Biotin is an essential vitamin in supporting the normal function and growth of skin, hair and growth and is also present in our REGENSIFY formulation. DHT can be blocked either by Finasteride or natural DHT blockers such as Saw Palmetto and Ecklonia Cava.

Does Shiseido Adenovital address hair loss due to DHT or nutrient deficiency?

The labels of Adenovital shampoo were in Japanese so we do not want to infer any conclusion. But there were no mentioning of DHT blockers or Biotin in the product description by the sellers in marketplace so it is quite likely that Adenovital shampoo does not contain any DHT Blocking ingredients. Having a growth stimulant ingredient like Adenosine without any DHT Blocker ingredient is like a bird flying with only one wing. You need both category of ingredients (Growth Stimulants and DHT Blockers) in order for the formulation to be effective.

REGENSIFY Shampoo is more than just an Adenosine or a DHT Blocker Shampoo...

Our shampoo addresses all three types of hair loss - DHT, scalp aging and nutrient deficiency. Our shampoo contains four key active ingredients, namely Saw Palmetto, Ecklonia Cava, Biotin and Adenosine, which works synergistically to provide a holistic scalp treatment.
